How to Remove a Broken Dart Stem

Read our latest guide on how to easily remove a broken dart stem

Here’s a quick guide on a common problem that many players face from time to time, and a question we get asked a lot.

How do I remove a broken dart stem? Well, there’s a couple of ways to go about doing this.

Firstly, I’m using these two darts as an example. Both with broken stems in, the dart with the gold barrel on the right is really stuck in tight and is proving quite difficult to get out. With the other one being slightly looser.

The first time you break the stem of one of your darts, you can think there’s no way to rescue it, but trust me, all is not lost!

Method 1: Using a Dart Point

So, what you need to do is use the point of another dart, and use the point to turn and turn the broken shaft, to try and screw it out. If it does turn, it should come out nice and easy.

Method 2: Using a Removal Tool

On the other hand, if the stem is stuck in tight and you can’t make it turn using the previous method, don’t try to force it as you can quite easily slip or chip the point of the dart.

Nevertheless, there’s a couple ways you can do this.

Firstly, you can buy a broken stem removal tool (here’s one we found on Amazon). All you need to do with this is insert the broken end into the tool and it’ll bite into the broken plastic stem, then simply apply pressure and turn it and it should come out.

Most people don’t think to buy a removal tool, as they don’t think they’re going to need them or they think it’s one of those things that they’re never going to use.

But it can be a handy tool to have and only cost a couple of dollars.

Method 3: Removal without a removal tool

But, if you don’t have a removal tool, what else can you do?

One way you can go about this is to use a small screwdriver, by heating up the end of the screwdriver and melting it into the plastic stem.

So firstly, we’re going to need a flame we can use to heat the end of the screwdriver. You can either use an open flame from the stove or a lighter, if you haven’t got a gas stove.

This should take less than a minute, maybe around 50 seconds to heat the screwdriver up enough. Then we can push the screwdriver into the stem, as you can see.

So now that the screwdriver is melted into the plastic, I should be able to turn it and the stem will come out. Like so!

That’s one method of removing the stems but if you’ve got a lighter, it would be easier.

You could also use a needle for this, but I think it’s easy with the screwdriver because it’s easier to turn once it’s melted in.

So that’s how you remove a broken stem.
